Sogakofe Senior High School was established in 1961. Its foundation stone was laid on 5th November, 1961 by Honourable F. Y. Asare, Member of Parliament and Regional Commissioner, Volta Region at the time. Sogakofe Senior High School, popularly called SOGASCO is one of the Secondary Schools established by the Ghana Educational Trust soon after the independence with funds built from the profits made by the Cocoa Marketing Board. Expansion of Secodary School education was one of the main achievements of the First Republican Government led by Ghana's first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

 

SOGASCO is situated on the main Tema-Aflao Highway along the lower Volta River and the lower Volta bridge, from which the accolade "the Lower Volta Varsity".

 

This school can be located at the south-eastern part of the Sogakofe Township on a 319.76 acre land as evidenced in the Executive Instrument (E.I.48) of the State Lands Act, 1962.

 

Sogakofe Senior High School has Day and Boarding facilities for both Boys and Girls. It has a population of over 2,000 students in the 2012/2013 academic year. During the same period, staff population of "the Lower Volta Varsity" was One hundred (100) for Teaching Staff and Seventy-three (73) for Non-Teaching Staff. SOGASCO, "the Lower Volta Varsity" also has a Basic Education Section from Kindergarten to Junior High School with student population of over five hundred (500) and staff population of twenty-six (26).

 

Going by the accolade " the Lower Volta Varsity" the school in collaboration with the University of Education, Winneba became a study campus for Diploma and Degree programmes in 2009/2010 academic year. The school is, therefore, composed of:

  • SOGASCO PRIMARY

  • SOGASCO JUNIOR SCHOOL

  • SOGAKOFE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

  • UNIVERSITY OF EDUCATION (SOGASCO STUDY CAMPUS)

​Over the years several transformation took place. Population increase, academic progress and infrastructural development. Since 2009 final examinations, the school has not witnessed any total failure - the school scored 100% each year including the lastest 2013 WASSCE. The PTA of the school is very instrumental in infrastructural development.

 

"The Lower Volta Varsity" has a thirteen (13) member School Board of Governors that is constantly in touch with school authorithies in ensuring total transformation of all spheres of school programmes and facilities.

 

The first Headmaster, Mr. Edward K. Datsa, arrived in the school on Thursday, 31st August, 1961. He immediately took on his assignment to open a new secondary school. He went round Sogakofe and its environs to conduct interviews and enrolled the pioneers of the new school.

Based on our mission and vision statements, the school is striving to achieve the following goals:

 

  • Make available enough resources for effective day-to-day administrative functions.

  • Provide adequate logistics for the promotion of effective teaching and learning.

  • Maintain physical infrastructure and other school properties.

  • The messing department is well resourced and boarding students well catered for.

 

Though a large number was admitted only thirteen (13) reported on the first day: Nine (9) boys and four (4) girls. However, by the end of the first term in December, 1961 the number rose to twenty-eight (28) and by February 1962 it shot up to fifty (50). They were divided into two classes of twenty-five (25) each.

 

It was from this humble beginning that SOGASCO, "the Lower Volta Varsity" progressed steadily to its present status. To date, it has turned out more than twelve thousand (12,000) students.
